2022 Nissan 370z here comes the most recent of its lineup. Nissan Z is one of the most important sports car families of all time. Its members include the iconic 240Z, game-changing Z32 300ZX, and tuners up to 350Z.
But today’s 370Z is starting to wither. Fast and exciting, the decade-old Z is old-fashioned and simple on the inside. But a replacement is coming. This is what we know so far.
Our stealth preview of the most exciting car to come in the next few years is based on knowledge from leaked product development plans, spy photos, and silent insiders mixed in with officially released information.
The reporting of this story was completed in February and early March before the auto industry began to feel the major impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As many automakers now postpone or halt development programs, the debut and sales dates reported here are subject to change.
The sports car that everyone forgot – including Nissan, it seems – is still alive, though not very good. Compared to today’s sports car, the 11-year-old Nissan 370Z is as competitive as a bicycle.
However, later this year, Nissan will finally give the Z car the attention it deserves by introducing a replacement.
2022 Nissan 370Z News
On September 15, Nissan unveiled the Z Proto, a prototype of its new Z sports car that is almost ready for production. With a retro-inspired design, the car will look like a road-ready Z once it hits dealerships next year.
The front has a large box grille taken from the original 240Z, while the taillight cluster has the same styling as the Nineties 300ZX.

2022 Nissan 370Z Redesign
The new Z, codenamed Z35, won’t be a fundamental rethink. It will continue the latest version of the Nissan FM platform and share components with the Infiniti Q60 coupe.
The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 that delivers up to 400 horsepower on the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 looks like a shoo-in. The seven-speed automatic transmission is the only transmission available on the Infinitis, but we hope that gearshift will also be offered.
Nissan already hinted that such a thing might happen when it fitted a six-speed manual to the twin-turbo engine for the modified SEMA 370Z concept in 2019.
The engine and architecture can accommodate all-wheel drive, but we doubt Nissan will go that way. The Z is a front-engined rear-wheel-drive sports car, and this one should stay true to that legacy.
The name 300Z (or 300ZX for nostalgia’s sake) would make the most sense given the engine displacement, but we predict that Nissan will choose the 400Z to emphasize the new car’s superiority over its predecessor.
The original Datsun 240Z is said to serve as styling inspiration. We hope that means the 400Z will present simple, clean lines rather than the busy, torturous look seen on some of Nissan’s recent concept and production cars.
The round headlights and 300ZX-style taillights will reportedly serve as key retro touches.
Old school themes will not extend inward; that’s a good thing because the Z’s interior needs a modern makeover. The cabin should retain its comfortable two-seater atmosphere but will benefit from Nissan’s latest infotainment system and fresh dashboard design.
2022 Nissan 370Z Spyshot
After years of sitting on the sidelines, Nissan has finally developed a successor to the 370Z.
The automaker has been seen carrying a test mule on the Nürburgring, and despite the shells of the current 370Z, we can still gather some clues about the next generation of the Z sports car line.
The front fascia of the 370Z has been modified with an extra opening on this test mule, indicating a new powertrain is in development.
More noticeable are the overhangs at each wheel bore, suggesting the redesigned Z has a narrower track than the 370Z. Yes, we can see a smaller, more agile successor.
This makes perfect sense as Nissan is tinkering with the idea of launching a smaller sports car to sit under the Z and GT-R, and even unveiling a funky IDX concept in 2013 to gauge interest.
Plans for a smaller sports car have been dropped and as a result, Nissan will tend to skimp on the Z a bit.
Speaking to Motor Authority in April, Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the GT-R and Nismo, said the redesigned Z might not be that much lighter, but it could be ridden that way.
In line with this new positioning, it is hoped that the redesigned Z will also offer several powertrains to appeal to a wider spectrum of buyers.
Here’s hoping one of the powertrains is the 400 horsepower, 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged V-6 found in some Infiniti models. Hybrid options can also be a possibility.
Nissan has a Toyota Supra for benchmarking purposes, so it’s clear what level of performance to target.
We’re still in a very early stage of development, so don’t expect the new Z to be revealed until 2021, at the earliest. Such a timeline suggests the car will arrive as a 2022 model.
We’ll remind you that the 370Z has been on sale since 2009. Incidentally, that’s when the GT-R first went on sale.
2022 Nissan 370Z Engine
The new Z will be powered by Infiniti’s 3.0 liter twin-turbo version of the V-6, sending power to the rear wheels.
Nissan hasn’t released specs or performance figures, saying only that it will be more powerful than the 370Z’s currently powered 332-horsepower 3.7 liters naturally aspirated V-6.
We suspect the car will use the 400 horsepower version currently found on the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 Red Sport 400.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen this variant on the Z – Nissan built the current-generation 370Z with a powerhouse called Project Clubsport 23 for SEMA in 2018.
The Z Proto shown above is equipped with a true six-speed manual transmission, which Nissan says will be standard on production cars.
This gives the car an edge over its main competitor, the Toyota Supra, which is currently only offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Of course, fast auto shifting will be available as an option for those who prefer to let the car do the shift.
One thing we don’t know is what it’s called. Usually, we assume that new generation cars will keep their current names, but Nissan Z cars usually change their names every generation.
Historically they were based on displacement; The 300ZX has a 3.0-liter engine, while the 350Z has a 3.5-liter engine, and so on.
The thing is, if the 3.0-liter turbo engine finally powers the next Z, we can’t believe Nissan will bring back the 300Z name.
Generally, the numbers in the auto world are on the rise, a marketing habit where you never want to sell anything that looks “lower” than last year’s model.
That’s why we expect it to be called the 400Z, as Autocar reports. The term “Z Proto”, as far as we can tell, is only used for the prototype we have shown above.
2022 Nissan 370Z Price and Release Date
On the day of the Z Proto’s launch, Nissan product specialist Hiroshi Tamura confirmed in an interview that the new Nissan Z will use a highly modified version of the current Z architecture, not an entirely new platform.
This contradicts previous reports claiming the Z may instead share its foundation with the Infiniti Q60.
In a world where sports cars are part of a shrinking market, it is not easy to justify an all-new architectural development. So this move makes sense. Hopefully, it won’t hurt the way the car drives.
According to CarScoops, his debut is slated for late 2020. But with so many schedules canceled by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, that date could be pushed back.
Car and Driver, for its part, has always expected the 400Z to submit to 2021. Pricing and release information isn’t out yet, but we’ll continue to update this post as we get more details on the next Z.
Today’s 370Z starts at $ 31,015, making it a decent performance offer even though it’s old. When it goes on sale next year, the new model will see a price hike but start at $ 40,000 to undercut the Toyota Supra.
