2024 Nissan Altima is a reliable and popular vehicle. However, the recent owner was not happy with all aspects. JD Power’s long-term APEAL studies have found that certain elements of the Altima do not meet owner expectations.
JD Power considers the Altima to be a serviceable vehicle with several advantages and at least three major drawbacks. The review includes the results of a 27-year Automotive Evaluation, Performance, and Performance (APEAL) study conducted by JD Power that adds a fourth potential area of concern.
The APEAL study asked respondents to rank 10 attributes of their vehicle based on how much they liked it. These attributes include vehicle access, infotainment, interior design, comfort, starting, powertrain, fuel efficiency, safety, driving feel, and exterior design.
Respondents who had owned the new vehicle for more than 90 days were invited to share their perspectives on this attribute, allowing JD Power readers to gain valuable information on various cars.
Based on the APEAL results, the owner is quite satisfied with several critical areas: the interior and the infotainment system. Considering that the purchase price of the 2023 Nissan Altima is slightly higher than other vehicles in its segment, this aspect may be enough to encourage drivers to look elsewhere.
2024 Nissan Altima Review
The Nissan Altima is a midsize sedan that has been on the market for nearly three decades. Today’s Altima is part of the sixth generation of the car and came with a couple of four-cylinder engine options and optional all-wheel drive, which ultimately became the Altima’s calling card when the rest of the car fell behind.
Most competitors in this segment are also offered a hybrid powertrain, but the Altima is not electrified. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, but the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine found in the VC-Turbo version offers more performance. AWD is available on most models along with the base engine.
Last year’s car received a few minor updates, with refreshed front-end styling and a new optional 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay wireless connectivity. (Android Auto still requires a cable.) With the recent round of updates, we don’t expect much to change for the 2024 model year.
The Altima still feels a step behind the rest of the class when it comes to interior refinements, and its screen, while large, has old-school graphics and an intuitive interface. special. Nissan Altima 2024
The 2024 Nissan Altima is a perfectly adequate family sedan with a sharp look, spacious cabin, and all-wheel drive available. For power, the Altima has two different four-cylinder engines to choose from: a 182-hp base engine or a turbocharged variable compression unit with 248 horsepower. However, that was as far as Altima pushed the envelope.
No matter how you define it, it comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and delivers a drive that’s genteel than dashing. With an EPA estimate of 39 mpg for road driving, the Altima is extremely fuel efficient for a non-hybrid vehicle.
A roomy interior, comfortable seating, an optional 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a solid offering of standard safety features make this sedan easy to use—even if it lacks the Honda Accord touches or Toyota Camry refinements.
Nissan updated the Altima’s appearance with new wheels, a redesigned front fascia with new LED headlights, and the automaker’s new logo. There are two new paint options as well: Gray Sky Pearl and Garnett Pearl Metallic. In addition to these minor visual tweaks, the top Platinum trim level has been renamed the SL.

With a slight refresh, it is hoped that the Nissan Altima will get the Nissan Safety Shield 360, which is a suite of driver warning and assist technologies such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear traffic warning, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking.
You also get standard LED headlights, a new “V-motion” grille, and two new exterior paint options.
Optionally on the SV and SR, you can get a 12.3-inch HD color touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with navigation, wireless phone charging, and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality. However, that screen became standard on the SL and SR-VC Turbo.
Another standard on the SR VC-Turbo and SL is ProPilot Assist, which is Nissan’s adaptive cruise control that works with traffic and stop-and-go steering. It is also available as an option for the Altima SV.
The Altima’s standard engine for 2023 continues to be a 2.5-liter I-4 that gets 28 mpg city and 39 highway for a combined EPA rating of 32 mpg. For the SR and SL models, mileage drops to 27/37/31 mpg and will also come on the AWD version of the Altima. Not only does the SR continue to have the VC-Turbo as an option, but it’s also still only available on FWD.
Hopefully, Nissan has worked on the driveability of the turbocharged 2.0-liter VC-Turbo and variable compression I-4, otherwise, we might still be betting against it.
Meanwhile, the 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque the engine produces belies the engine’s efficiency with 25 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and a combined 29 mpg rating from the EPA.

2024 Nissan Altima Specs
The standard engine is still a 188-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and is paired with either front or all-wheel drive.
The 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with variable compression ratio (aka VC-Turbo) remains the more powerful option but is reserved for the front-wheel-drive SR model. Both engines use a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
While Nissan is looking for ways to make the 2024 Altima more appealing, there are a few easy fixes available. The company could start by making 12.3-inch touchscreens standard across trims and including wireless Android Auto. Additionally, replacing some, if not all, of the hard plastic with cloth will significantly increase Altima owners’ appreciation of the vehicle’s interior and driver comfort.
JD Power raised a few other areas of concern, most notably mediocre driving dynamics, fuel efficiency and a high base price for the segment. Reviewers noted that the optional (and expensive) AWD system didn’t make much of a difference in rainy weather and the noisy suspension had trouble handling speed bumps at any higher speed than it was set to. JD Power also noted that the steering was inaccurate, and the wind and road noise was constant. These are all areas that Nissan could improve on.
Reviewers also found that the Altima got fewer mpg than it rated with the standard and turbo powertrains. That sort of thing is hard for most drivers to measure, but Nissan (and the EPA) should double-check the vehicle’s ratings.
In addition, Nissan may also review prices if it wants to increase sales on next year’s model. The automaker may be counting on the Altima as one of the last remaining midsize sedans on the market. 2024 Nissan Altima Interior\
Of the 10 attributes ranked by APEAL respondents, interior design ranks eighth. While the 2023 Nissan Altima includes a different dash trim from the 2022 model, the current version is covered in lots of hard plastic. From an aesthetic perspective, the design looks fine, but the hard plastic can make the ride uncomfortable, especially over long distances. In addition, driver comfort is ranked seventh, most likely due to the plastic surface.
APEAL respondents also took issue with the touchscreen infotainment system, while JD Power really enjoyed it. At 12.3 inches, it’s larger than those found on previous models. It also connects to Amazon Alexa Skill, Google Assistant, and Apple CarPlay.
Owners may be unhappy that the infotainment system requires a wired connection for Android Auto or that the Bose sound system it’s paired with isn’t the best. Buyers will also have to buy an SV or higher trim to take advantage of the larger touch screen. As reviewers note, other vehicles in this segment offer longer trial subscriptions to compatible services.
Inside, the Altima cab provides a simple dashboard with easy-to-use switchgear. Interior materials vary between trim levels, but they are all significant improvements over the previous-generation Altima. Our SV test vehicle has attractive promise and tough plastic that attracts little attention.
The flat-bottomed steering wheel and faux carbon fiber are more or less here, especially since there are no paddle shifters or drive modes to choose from on the SV.
Convenience and Cargo
However, the soft armrests make cruising and sitting in traffic more tolerable. The front seats can accommodate a wide range of body types, but we found the lumbar support too aggressive. The large rear seats are very comfortable with ample legroom.
We loaded six carry-on bags in the Altima’s trunk and a total of 17 bags with the rear seats folded. These numbers match the Camrys we tested, but both are less than 19 Accord bags.
Unfortunately, the Nissan rear seat is not completely level and has to be released using the handle in the trunk, which is inconvenient. The Altima has decent storage in the front seats, with door pockets that are narrow though deep and a useful tray at the front of the center console.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The Altima’s standard 8.0-inch touchscreen has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. The infotainment interface has a customizable main menu but otherwise some personalization options.
While the sound system has knobs that are handy for volume and adjustment, the touchscreens we tested responded slowly to input.
The Altima SL and SR get a 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone charging, and a standard WiFi hotspot. A larger screen is optional on the SV model.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
Each Altima has forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, high beam assist, rear traffic warning, and more. Nissan also offers a semi-autonomous driving mode called ProPilot Assist.

ADVANCED DRIVE-ASSIST DISPLAY
Assuming we’re all going to ignore the under-equipped base S trim, the rest of the 2024 Nissan Altima range has a 7-inch digital driver information display. It adds a touch of classy technology to a rather plain cabin.
The alternative 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the SR model has variable compression, as indicated by the initials VC. Fixed compression has been a common method in combustion engines for the last 100 years or so. This ingenious engineering piece revolutionized all that by optimizing performance or efficiency, according to the needs of the time.
Nissan hasn’t gone it alone nor has the 2024 Nissan Altima sedan provided any help by equipping the base S trim so very rarely. Let’s take a quick look at the car’s shortcomings: Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, alloy wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s not up to par with the competition.
One of the positives is the safety features including forwarding collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and — new standard this year — rear parking sensors, rear automatic braking, plus blind spot monitoring with rear traffic warning. . It also gets LED headlights with automatic high beams.
Otherwise, there are things like 16-inch steel wheels, fabric upholstery, and a basic infotainment system with a 7-inch screen and one USB-A port.
2024 Nissan Altima Engine
The Altima has a standard 188-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces up to 248 horsepower on premium fuel and also uses a CVT.
While Nissan touts its innovative variable compression technology, only the 2.5-liter engine can be had with all-wheel drive. The standard four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive have predictable, albeit mediocre, acceleration.
The engine got noisier the harder we pressed the gas pedal, but the four-cylinder Camry we tested was sometimes just as loud. The VC-Turbo engine makes the Altima significantly faster. Despite its unconventional turbocharged engine and unusual all-wheel drive, the Nissan isn’t as fun to drive as the Accord.
The Altima SR received a sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels that made it even more entertaining on winding sections of the road. However, this upgrade also reduces the ride quality found on the regular Altima model.
Surprisingly, the top-of-the-line SL (formerly known as Platinum) model we drove had more cornering grip than the 2019 BMW 330i xDrive we tested. Nissan also has a comfortable ride that prevents vibration on bumpy pavement.
The steering system is just right by family sedan standards and doesn’t add any effort to mimic the feel of a steering wheel. The Altima brake pedal has linear feedback and quick response to our input.

2024 Nissan Altima MPG
The Altima doesn’t offer the fuel-efficient hybrid or eco-friendly plug-in-hybrid model that many of its competitors do, but its two petrol engines have high fuel economy ratings and even better real-world results.
When equipped with front-wheel drive, the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine gets an EPA estimate of 28 mpg per city and 39 roads.
With all-wheel drive, those EPA estimates drop to 26 mpg city and 36 mpg on the highway. The 2.0-liter turbocharged gets an EPA estimate of 25 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway.
