2022 Nissan 400Z: All-New Nissan 400Z Specs Preview, Price and Release Date

2022 Nissan 400Z The sports car is having a moment – witness the revived Toyota Supra and the splashy mid-engined Corvette that both debuted last year – so it’s time for Nissan to redesign the aging Z coupe, which we expect will bear the name 400Z.

Nissan has kept the details secret about the 400Z, but now we know that the updated sports car will come with a twin-turbo V-6 – likely borrowed from the Infiniti Q60 coupe – and a six-speed manual transmission. Luckily, the Z will receive a technology update with new touchscreen infotainments, a digital meter display, and possibly several new driver assistance features.

While the last-gen 370Z competes with more affordable sports cars like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Toyota 86 in terms of price and performance, this next-generation car is expected to hit the market a bit to put the Supra in the crosshairs.

Nissan sells the three oldest cars in its class in the Frontier, GT-R, and 370Z respectively. The current 370Z and GT-R sports cars made their debut in 2008, and the Frontier pickup appeared a few years earlier. But while we already know that the company is working hard on a new Frontier pickup – and we have all the details here – Nissan is also preparing a replacement for the old 370Z sports car. At last.

Once a handsome and powerful choice in its class, the 12-year-old Nissan 370Z has become obsolete. While most competitors have been modernized and turbocharged, the Z is still using the naturally aspirated technology, design, and engine from 2008. It’s time for a change – thankfully, those changes will come sooner rather than later.

Nissan’s iconic Z car will be all-new for 2021. Previewed by the Z Proto concept car, the new 400Z draws design inspiration from past Z cars but gives us a glimpse into the future with much-needed updated technology and interior modernization. We expect the 400Z to debut next year as a hardtop coupe but a convertible could follow later.

Nissan 400Z To Be Unveiled Late 2022, Sold In 2023. In late May, Nissan announced its big plans to get back in shape financially by reducing costs and investing in product improvements to make it more competitive. Known as the “NISSAN NEXT: From A to Z” plan, this is a four-year program that will run until the end of the fiscal year 2023, which in Japan runs until March 31, 2024.

As part of the plan, Nissan has promised to launch a dozen new vehicles in the next 18 months, but a new report from Auto Express has us worried about the long-awaited Z car. While the company has gotten the ball rolling with newcomers such as the next-generation Rogue, Ariya electric SUV, and India’s small crossover Magnate, it looks like we’ll have a long wait for the 370Z’s successor.

Contrary to Nissan’s agenda to launch 12 models by the end of 2021, the British magazine claims the 400Z – or whatever it is called – will not be launched until the end of 2022. It is expected to hit the market in 2023, which will coincide with 370Z’s 15th anniversary.

The report comes as somewhat of a surprise because just a month ago Nissan’s vice president of global product strategy, Ivan Espinosa, said the car was “very close” to launch.

The new Nissan Z Proto – a preview of its final production model – debuts on September 15, 2020.

You can trace the origins of the Nissan 370Z to the iconic Datsun 240Z. The sports car is credited for spawning the entire ‘Z’ family. Eventually, the 240Z evolved into the 260Z, and then the 280Z and 280ZX, before the company ditched the Datsun name in place of the Nissan-branded 300ZX and 350Z sports cars. Currently, Nissan calls it the “Z Proto” – as seen in the video above.

Most likely it suggests that the car we see next week will be a concept. But the actual production model – as some reports have shown – should be called the 400Z.

Granted, we’ve never seen a 400Z spy image at all, which may be a sign that disclosure isn’t imminent. On the other hand, the next-generation model is not expected to be an all-new vehicle as the consensus will be a 370Z reskin with some hardware changes. This begs the question – why did it take so long to introduce automobiles?

Seeing the latest generation of Nissan Z, or while we call it the Nissan 400Z, it is reported that it will be introduced at the end of 2022. Meanwhile, sales of this car will only begin in 2023, yep, 2 years from now. But why did it take so long? Is Nissan not ready for this product? Of course, only Nissan can answer that, but if you pay attention, 2023 is a special year for Nissan Z.

In that year, the Nissan 370Z, which is still on sale, will turn 15 years old. It seems that this moment will be used by Nissan to make way for its successor.

Well, the Nissan 400Z itself is reportedly going to be maximized by this Japanese manufacturer to make as much profit as possible. Therefore, the marketing of this model will be focused on areas that have a large fan base of Nissan’s Z series. Call it the Americas, especially North America, then in Europe, and also in China.

Nissan itself is reportedly focusing on testing this car with a “leather” camouflage using the body of the Nissan 370Z. Alfonso Albaisa, Senior VP Design at Nissan said, “The Nissan Z was a car that democratized sports cars in the 60s. The car that is currently being sold has been in the dealership for too long, so you can imagine how the car designer is working on the newest version ”.

Nissan has given only a few hints about the final Z shape, which you can see in the image above and some below. We wanted to see something akin to an IDX concept from 2013 – the company has hinted at a retro style – or a look comparable to our rendering. Even some of the concepts below provide good design directions.

But in all likelihood, Nissan will take an evolutionary approach in designing the 400Z, building on the base of the current 370Z, and using current family cues like the V Motion grille and floating roof. But don’t expect the 370Z’s old-fashioned interior to get carried away, luckily.

The 400Z should also get a new badge. Filing for trademarks starting in March preview the new retro-inspired Z logo and the new Nissan logo. Both emblems must be attached to new Nissan sports cars.

2022 Nissan 400Z Interior

Even though it’s new for 2021, Nissan hasn’t changed the layout of the Z’s cabin yet. It remains a two-seater coupe without the rest of the Porsche 911-style rear seats. What has changed, however, is everything. Seen in the image of the Z Proto concept vehicle, the new Z will receive a modernized cabin with updated materials – a welcome upgrade from the current vintage 370Z interior.

To justify the expected price hike, we expect Nissan to use genuine leather seats, power-adjustable seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Cargo space remains a mystery, but we don’t expect the 400Z to turn out to be a Costco-run champion; we loaded three carry-on cases in the trunk of the 370Z, which should be plenty for a buyer of such a vehicle.

Perhaps one of the Z categories that have the most room for improvement is in its infotainment offering. The current car is one of the few new cars on the road to date that does not have the standard touchscreen infotainment system, something Nissan will no doubt tackle with the new 400Z.

We were expecting an 8.0-inch (or larger) touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Nissan’s latest NissanConnect user interface. The Z Proto concept vehicle even features a fully digital measuring screen. Navigation will no doubt be an option and premium audio will likely be engineered by Bose.

2022 Nissan 400Z Engine

There has been an endless series of speculations regarding the future of the Z car, culminating with the potential for a 400 horsepower version of the Nismo of the twin-turbo V6 engine. The 3.0-liter unit is believed to have originated from the Infiniti Q60 and will be offered in the new 400Z with manual and automatic transmissions.

When it finally arrives, competitors to the Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 will have the Nissan and Z logos recently updated. An electric version is not on the agenda for now as Espinosa says the technology isn’t ready for a sports car yet.

Some reports suggest that the new Nissan Z will borrow the V6 3.0-liter infinity Q60 twin-turbocharged. Currently, that engine makes up to 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) and 350 pound-feet (475 Newton-meters) in the Red Sport 400 model, and if we’re lucky, it could deliver the same amount of power at the 400Z.

But there are conflicting reports; some say that the base 400Z will have 400 hp while the Nismo model will produce 480 hp (358 kW). Others say that the Nismo model will be a 400 horse model, and the base model will do less than that. And to be honest, we’re not entirely sure that the new Nissan Z will have a twin-turbo V6 engine.

After all, the two-door Nissan should get the same seven-speed automatic as its Infiniti counterparts if those engine rumors are true, with the six-speed manual confirmed via a recent teaser – but don’t expect all-wheel drive. Nissan probably won’t adopt the Infiniti all-wheel-drive system and instead retain pure Z rear-wheel drive.

Like its sibling, the Nissan GT-R, the 400Z is expected to be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6. But, instead of the 565 hp 3.8-liter engine that is under the hood of the GT-R, the 400Z will likely get a 300 hp 3.0-liter engine from the Infiniti Q60.

It’s also possible that the high-performance NISMO variant could get a 400-hp version of the engine currently exclusive to the Q60 Red Sport 400. While all-wheel drive is available on Infiniti, we expect Nissan to stick with the dedicated rear-wheel drive for the 400Z. Nissan has promised a six-speed manual transmission as standard, but we hope a seven-speed automatic will also be offered as an option.

The EPA hasn’t released any estimates for fuel economy for the new Z, but if the Q60 is anything to on, we can expect highway fuel economy ratings as high as 28 mpg or so, with city ratings falling just south of the 20- mpg line. We’ll know more closer to the car’s on-sale date and we’re hoping to test the 400Z’s highway fuel economy on our 200-mile test route.

2022 Nissan 400Z Price and Release Date

We expect price increases above 370Z currently to somewhere in the mid $ 40,000 range for the starting price. To justify its higher price tag, we expect the 400Z to up the ante with more luxurious features, better performance, and more desirable styling, all of which will also help it move up from the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Subaru BRZ playing field to compete with. The likes of the Supra, BMW Z4, and Audi TT.

The current Nissan 370Z costs $ 30,090 to start, the 50th Anniversary Edition starts at $ 36,420, and the high-powered Nismo model is asking for a hefty $ 45,590. But given the possibility of a new twin-turbocharged engine and completely revised styling – both inside and out – the new Nissan Z could see a rise in prices over its predecessor.

Reports say that a Nissan sports car can cost as much as $ 40,000 to start, with the base Nismo model exceeding $ 50,000.

The Nissan Z Proto will debut on September 15, 2020. But the earliest we can see Nissan Z production is later this year. In fact, given Nissan’s current status – the company is trying to cut $ 2.8 billion in spending – and the coronavirus is slowing down the industry as a whole, we don’t expect to be able to buy the sports car until at least 2021.

  • Base – $ 45,000 (est)
  • Premium – $ 48,000 (estimate)
  • Track – $ 50,000 (estimate)
  • NISMO – $ 53,000 (est)
