There aren’t many specifics about this new electric SUV yet, but there are some signs that it was made to be able to go off-road. Automotive News says that it will change in 2028.
Nissan seems to confirm that the Xterra will also be coming back at the same dealer meeting where Infiniti announced the comeback of the Q50. Would it have been better if the new Xterra had come out a year after the new Frontier? Yes, but that didn’t happen, and it’s better late than never. We don’t have much information right now, so if you want to know the engine specs and exact price, you’re out of luck.
Automotive News says, however, that it will be a “tough, affordable midsize SUV” with “an upright grille and square headlights” and “a boxy, adventure-ready design,” so at least the appearance should be what people expect.
They also think that the new Xterra will have a V6 hybrid engine and that there might even be a plug-in version that can go around 75 miles before the engine needs to be turned back on. A 75-mile plug-in hybrid may sound crazy, but if Nissan is going to manufacture it, we won’t complain. That’s a long enough range for severe off-road driving without polluting the air. Other automakers already have PHEV SUVs with 50-mile ranges.

That’s why we’re not shocked that the XTerra’s release date has been pushed back from 2027 to late 2028, with the release of a comparable Infiniti car a year later. Nissan might still be waiting to see if and how the political atmosphere in the US evolves and if an electric SUV still makes sense.
Even though there are problems with the law, we think that Nissan will probably not kill the Xterra, even if it does cancel some of its other EVs. However, we wouldn’t bank on the Infiniti, which is a coupe version of the Xterra, surviving. Even if the US market becomes so unfriendly to electric vehicles that government mandates trump the growing consumer acceptance of EVs, an off-road capable electric SUV with decent ground clearance and tough design will likely still sell in markets beyond our own.
If Nissan changes its attitude on electric vehicles, it may return the Xterra and base it on the Frontier pickup. This is an interesting but unlikely idea. If well-designed, a standard body-on-frame, internal-combustion SUV may be a viable competitor to the Bronco and Land Cruiser listed above. It wouldn’t make Nissan’s platform proliferation problem worse.
