In the Frontier 2025 segment, we fully expect the 2025 Nissan Frontier to significantly update its entire lineup. This includes the luxurious SL trim with leather upholstery, a 10-speaker Fender radio system, and improved LED lighting features.
On the other hand, updates follow in the 1980s-inspired Hardbody Edition model, incorporating styling features from Nissan Hardbody pickup trucks that paved the way for the modern Frontier, including alloy wheels, body stickers, and a bed-mounted sport bar.

What We Believe?
With the arrival of the all-new 2025 Nissan Frontier comes real and significant improvements. We like its new look, which is rugged without being boring, and the cabin offers ample storage space and excellent control ergonomics. This update will also bring the Frontier up to date in terms of infotainment and active safety technology, although none of the driver assistance functions come as standard.
Despite the ostensible updates, the Frontier still feels dated. Its nine-speed automatic transmission sometimes struggles to find the right gear, and its fuel efficiency is not impressive. The engine is also noisy. The ride dynamics are also disappointing, with clumsy handling, overly heavy steering, a large turning radius, and a busy ride quality.
Towing and payload capacities are adequate for the market, and we were impressed with the Nissan’s steadiness when towing a trailer. We’re also over our Frontier’s long-term loan. While not the most cutting-edge mid-size pickup on the market, the Frontier has some redeeming traits.

Nissan began marketing the latest generation Frontier pickup vehicle in 2022. It represented a significant advancement in design and available technology at the time. It did, however, stick with a classic (although upgraded) 3.8-liter V6 paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Under specific situations, most competitors are converting to smaller turbocharged four-cylinder engines that produce more torque and economy.
If this is the planned 2025 Frontier redesign, will it be a simple design tweak or will there be new powertrain options? Is Nissan developing a gas/electric hybrid powertrain? This lightly camouflaged prototype was spotted in Arizona, towing a huge tandem axle box trailer.
Many pickup truck manufacturers test new prototypes in Arizona because it has hot weather in Phoenix, considerably frigid weather near Flagstaff, vast elevation differences, and severe highway grades. We’ll have to wait for further photographs of this prototype and other images.
2025 Nissan Frontier Design
Retro trucks are awesome. The original Nissan Hardbody pickup from the ’80s and ’90s is among the coolest, and it appears that the modern-day Nissan Frontier will get a special edition based on its forefather. The specifications of that vehicle will be revealed next week on September 14, and while Nissan teased us with the teaser images seen above today, we may already have a fair idea of what the actual product will look like.
Nissan introduced the Project Hardbody concept at the 2022 Chicago auto show, which was a tribute to the original pickup’s Desert Runner variant. The concept includes a lifted ride height, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires mounted on stylish wheels that seem identical to the old-school set, and a red paint job reminiscent of the classic Hardbody.
Other prominent features include black over-fenders, a front skid plate, and a sports bar with a pair of LEDs. A spare tire is installed in the bed, and black “4×4” decals are applied to the front doors. While Nissan didn’t provide any of those features in the teaser image shared today, we’re guessing the 2024 Frontier Hardbody variant will look a lot like the concept, with its glossy black front fascia, chunky tread pattern, and black hood decal.
The characteristics of the yet-to-be-revealed Frontier are unknown, but it’s a safe guess that it’ll have the same 310-hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed automated transmission as every previous Frontier. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Hardbody-inspired variant is based on the off-road-oriented Pro-4X model, which means it’ll cost more than $37,000. We’ll learn more next week.

Nissan has gone a long way in terms of interior design, and the Frontier benefits from many of those advancements. The huge, easy-to-read infotainment display dominates the inside while leaving plenty of space for climate control and other buttons. Some of those buttons, however, are not properly laid out and can be difficult to discover at times. The clunky instrument panel menus and steering wheel-mounted buttons might also use a redesign.
Surprisingly, the Frontier lacks a telescopic steering wheel, which will make finding a suitable seating position difficult for certain drivers. back passengers may also be disappointed since the Frontier’s back legroom is clearly on the small side for adults. Outward visibility is on par with the rest of the class. The Frontier comes with an optional surround-view camera system. Although it can aid with parking, the camera images are frustratingly low-resolution and blurry.
Thankfully, the Frontier’s interior design and materials appear to be a significant advance over its predecessor’s antiquated and plastic-laden cabin. Nissan not only added much-needed snazzier trim pieces and soft-touch surfaces, but it also brought more modern amenities.
The gauge cluster now has a larger 7.0-inch color display to contrast its analog gauges. There is also a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Speaking of seats, Nissan’s Zero Gravity thrones continue to pamper our backsides in the Frontier.
A bin on top of the dashboard and a storage area under the back seat are among the interior cubby storage options. The truck has two wheelbase lengths that allow for a short and long cargo bed, with the former measuring just under five feet and the latter reaching slightly more than six feet.
Connectivity and infotainment
The 2017 Frontier’s infotainment system is controlled by a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen or an optional 9.0-inch touchscreen. Below the screen are two physical knobs for controlling the volume and tuning parameters of the stereo.
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and various charging outlets, including a USB-C connector, are among the most desirable standard connectivity features. The Frontier can also be ordered with a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone charging. For an extra fee, the sound system can be upgraded to a nine-speaker Fender unit.

The climate control system is simple to use and capable of maintaining a comfortable temperature on a hot day. However, we were dismayed that our Frontier lacked rear air vents. On the highway, we also noted an unusual quantity of wind noise.
Capacity for Towing and Payload
The Frontier’s towing capability is limited to 6720 pounds, putting it behind competitors like the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Jeep Gladiator, all of which can tow at least 7650 pounds. The maximum payload of the Nissan is 1610 pounds.

The Frontier’s rear-drive engine gets 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the interstate. These values drop to 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway with four-wheel drive.
