What We Believe?

The arrival of the all-new 2025 Nissan Frontier brings real and significant improvements. We like its new look, which is rugged without being boring. The cabin offers ample storage space and excellent control ergonomics. This update will also keep the Frontier updated regarding infotainment and active safety technology, although none of the driver assistance functions come as standard.

Despite the apparent updates, the Frontier still feels dated. Its nine-speed automatic transmission sometimes struggles to find the right gear, and its fuel efficiency is not impressive. The engine is also noisy. The ride dynamics are disappointing, with clumsy handling, overly heavy steering, a large turning radius, and a busy ride quality.

Towing and payload capacities are adequate for the market, and we were impressed with the Nissan’s steadiness when towing a trailer. We’re also over our Frontier’s long-term loan. While not the most cutting-edge midsize pickup on the market, the Frontier has some redeeming traits.

Nissan began marketing the latest generation Frontier pickup vehicle in 2022. It represented a significant advancement in design and available technology at the time. However, it stuck with a classic (although upgraded) 3.8-liter V6 paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. In specific situations, most competitors convert to smaller turbocharged four-cylinder engines that produce more torque and economy.

If this is the planned 2025 Frontier redesign, will it be a simple design tweak, or will there be new powertrain options? Is Nissan developing a gas/electric hybrid powertrain? This lightly camouflaged prototype was spotted in Arizona, towing a vast tandem axle box trailer.

Many pickup truck manufacturers test new prototypes in Arizona because it has hot weather in Phoenix, considerably frigid weather near Flagstaff, vast elevation differences, and severe highway grades. We’ll have to wait for further photographs of this prototype and other images.

2025 Nissan Frontier Design

Retro trucks are fantastic. The original Nissan Hardbody pickup from the ’80s and ’90s is among the coolest, and it appears that the modern-day Nissan Frontier will get a special edition based on its forefather. The specifications of that vehicle will be revealed next week on September 14. While Nissan teased us with the teaser images seen above today, we may already have a fair idea of what the product will look like.

Nissan introduced the Project Hardbody concept at the 2022 Chicago auto show, a tribute to the original pickup’s Desert Runner variant. The concept includes a lifted ride height, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires mounted on stylish wheels that seem identical to the old-school set, and a red paint job reminiscent of the classic Hardbody.

Other prominent features include black over-fenders, a front skid plate, and a sports bar with LEDs. A spare tire is installed in the bed, and black “4×4” decals are applied to the front doors. While Nissan didn’t provide any of those features in the teaser image shared today, we’re guessing the 2024 Frontier Hardbody variant will look much like the concept, with its glossy black front fascia, chunky tread pattern, and black hood decal.

The characteristics of the yet-to-be-revealed Frontier are unknown. Still, it’s a safe guess that it’ll have the same 310-hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed automated transmission as every previous Frontier. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Hardbody-inspired variant is based on the off-road-oriented Pro-4X model, which means it’ll cost more than $37,000. We’ll learn more next week.

Most Frontier trim levels come standard with rear-wheel drive, with only the Pro-4X getting standard four-wheel drive (though it can be optioned across the board). We anticipate that the maximum payload (1,610 pounds) and maximum towing (6,720 pounds) will remain unchanged.

The Frontier isn’t the fastest midsize pickup on the market. Our Frontier Pro-4X test truck (off-road-oriented trim) went from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, which is average for its class. But the engine shines in everyday driving.

There’s enough oomph in the midrange, and the transmission shifts smoothly even at full throttle. The Frontier’s brakes are also relatively easy to use. They are easy to use in city traffic and strong enough to stop the vehicle quickly.

Another advantage of the Frontier is its guaranteed handling. Even with the all-terrain tires on the Pro-4X test vehicle, the truck felt planted in corners. However, the weighty steering is confusing. Maneuvering the Nissan through parking lots or across terrain requires a lot of power at low speeds. On the plus side, the Frontier can handle rough terrain.

2025 Nissan Frontier Interior

The 2025 Nissan Frontier’s interior panel configuration is one of its advantages; most midsize trucks only offer one cab and bed combination.

The 2025 Nissan Frontier King Cab is a two-door truck with a 6-foot bed. The four-door Crew Cab version of the Frontier can have a 5—or 6-foot bed. Compared to its rivals, rear legroom leaves something to be desired.

Nissan has gone a long way in interior design, and the Frontier benefits from many of those advancements. The vast, easy-to-read infotainment display dominates the inside while leaving plenty of space for climate control and other buttons. Some of those buttons, however, are not correctly laid out and can be challenging to discover at times. The clunky instrument panel menus and steering wheel-mounted buttons might also be redesigned.

Surprisingly, the Frontier lacks a telescopic steering wheel, making finding a suitable seating position difficult for specific drivers. Back passengers may also be disappointed since the Frontier’s back legroom is clearly on the small side for adults. Outward visibility is on par with the rest of the class. The Frontier comes with an optional surround-view camera system. Although it can aid with parking, the camera images are frustratingly low-resolution and blurry.

Thankfully, the Frontier’s interior design and materials advance significantly over its predecessor’s antiquated and plastic-laden cabin. Nissan added much-needed snazzier trim pieces and soft-touch surfaces, bringing more modern amenities.

The gauge cluster now has a larger 7.0-inch color display to contrast its analog gauges. There is also a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Regarding seats, Nissan’s Zero Gravity thrones continue to pamper our backsides in the Frontier.

The interior cubby storage options include a bin on the dashboard and a storage area under the back seat. The truck has two wheelbase lengths that allow for a short and long cargo bed, with the former measuring just under five feet and the latter reaching slightly more than six feet.

Technology

The 2025 Nissan Frontier is also equipped with a range of standard technologies that will be in place until 2025. The infotainment system, which is relatively basic but very easy to use, is an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment setup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

We expect all 2025 Nissan Frontier models to feature a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, at least one USB-A port, and one USB-C port. We anticipate that Nissan will continue to offer the 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen as an incentive to upgrade to the Pro-X, Pro-4X, and Hardbody trims.

Some trims of the 2025 Nissan Frontier can be equipped with an automatic 10-speaker Fender setup. But we thought the standard six-speaker setup sounded fine.

Comfort

The Frontier’s excellent riding quality is the standout here. Big dips and bumps are ignored at high speeds, and the Frontier remains similarly composed of town. Other features of the Frontier are less refined.

The padding in the front seat is a little too firm and flat, and the absence of seat adjustability makes it challenging to find an appropriate position.

The climate control system is simple to use and can maintain a comfortable temperature on a hot day. However, we were dismayed that our Frontier lacked rear air vents. On the highway, we also noted an unusual quantity of wind noise.

Cabin

For 2025, the Nissan Frontier should continue with the same cabin and bed combination options. Expect the midsize to come in two-door King Cab and four-door Crew Cab layouts.

The 2025 Nissan Frontier King Cab and Crew Cab models with the extended wheelbase have a 73.3-inch bed, while the Crew Cab bed with the standard wheelbase measures 59.5 inches.

2025 Frontier Payload

We expect the Nissan Frontier will maintain the same maximum towing and haulage for the 2025 model year. Think peak ratings of 6,640 pounds for trailering and peak payload capabilities of 1,620 pounds.

To achieve these numbers, stick with a Frontier King Cab 4×2. The Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed 4×4 has the lowest capability of all Nissan configurations, with a trailering capability of 6,240 pounds and a maximum payload of 1,100 pounds.
