The variable compression motor is quick to react out of the gate and punchy at higher speeds. Passing on the freeway takes as little as the quarter-throttle pressure-the power is always there when you need it. On paper, the engine sets up a modest 248 horsepower and 280 pounds-feet of torque; However, the reactive nature of the furnace-pot in conjunction with the fast reactions of the CVT (it also makes a solid impression of an eight-speed automatic transmission when you shoot the paddle controllers) makes the Altima feel a lot faster than his numbers suggest. While hardcore Power fans may miss the 3.5-liter Altima V6, the new variable-compression engine is an upgrade in all directions.
Nissan offers a sports trim: the SR. But this is not a sports agreement or MAZDA6 killer. The inline-furnace produces 188 HP and 180 lb-feet of torque, but it feels undernourished for its class. The available full traction system adds approximately 100 pounds to the Altima and redefines the limited power of the obsolete engine. You can’t blame the Nissan engineers for trying, though. Apart from the Subaru Legacy and Ford Fusion, the Altima 2019 is now one of the only sedans in the segment that delivers energy to the four wheels. The configuration itself is nothing to change the game, but its availability is.
What the 2.5-liter engine lacks in Grunt, it makes for efficiency. In the standard front traction configuration, the largest travel engine gets up to 28000 per city gallon, 39 freeway, and 32 handsets. This is tied with-or just below-competitors like the Camry (28/39/32), and the Agreement (30/38/33).
With the Top-Tier 2.0-litre VC-Turbo, however, the Altima averaged 25 miles per gallon in the city, 34 on the freeway, and 29 handsets. This is better than the Camry powered by V6 (22/32/26), but down a bit compared to the 2.0-liter chord (26/35/30), and the Mazda6 (26/35/29).
The biggest problem with the Altima is its trim configurations available. Nissan offers only the VC-Turbo with front traction and limits all driving wheels to the 2.5-liter underpowered engine. Nissan says a big part of the buyers would prefer the 2.5 with AWD on the VC-Turbo. We will accept to disagree.
One of the biggest improvements to the Altima as a whole is the cabin. Sleek lines and comfortable layout are a welcome contrast to the sharp exterior. The 8-inch IPad-style touch screen infotainment system (standard throughout the range) combines with an ergonomic button arrangement for air conditioning controls.
Style, however, does not give way to a lot of stuff, and there are a lot of hard plastics handy. None of the materials is extremely offensive to this class, but they are not tied with other high-end competitors-skewing like the MAZDA6 and tuning. There is some reprieve in the form of simulated wooden trim parts and leather treatments with orange seams-but you will have to pay more to experience these subtleties.
Basic, however, does not mean uncomfortable, and the Altima cabin is a nice place for hours at a time. The “Zero Gravity” Nissan seats are optional throughout the range and are available in leather on the SL and Platinum models, or with Nissan’s “Sports Combo” processing (which combines fabric and imitation leather). Regardless of the material, the optional seats are soft and supportive.
A leaner dashboard also gives extra legs, and those at the front are Orés of 48.3 inches from the leg room – a 3.3 inch gain on the old car. This is better than the agreement (42.3), Camry (42.1), and Mazda6 (42.2). The rear space takes a… backseat, however-the rear seats are down 0.8 inches from the previous model. The 35.2 inches of the rear legroom is even less than the Versa (38.3) and will smell (37.4), the Nissan sedans that occupy the two segments below the Altima.
