Nissan’s luxurious full-size sedan sees few changes for 2018, but the boss among them is the addition of auto Android joining Apple’s display as standard equipment across the range. A pair of USB charging ports of the rear seat are now available in SL embellishments, Sr and Platinum, a refreshed color palette now includes the red of Pamelian, and all the maximums see a slight refreshing visual with the addition of black accents on the grid. Front-collision warning and automated emergency braking were added as standard to 2017 models late in the production cycle and are also standard at 2018 Maximas.

Having been completely redesigned for model year 2016, Maxima received minimum updates for 2017. In particular, Apple’s display became standard at all levels of adjustment, allowing IPhone users to connect and control their touch screen devices of 8.0 inches Maxima. (Android Auto, however, was not included in this update.) Also new were the Medallion packages and dynamic accessories. Both included 18-inch wheels, lighted doorsills, and a rear spoiler. The Medallion package added interior and exterior accent lighting, while the dynamic package included unique lower threshold moldings.

With the good ratings of the fuel economy, as well as the real-world results above average, Maxima’s powertrain is shown adept at mixing performance and efficiency. Its range of road cruises also makes it a perfect long distance companion. EPA-Fuel economy estimates for the 2018 Maxima have not changed from last year’s model, and you won’t find us complaining. Maxima proved to be a fuel sorbent in our real world tests last year.

We do our own fuel economy test in an attempt to replicate how most people drive on the road. Our procedure involves a 200-mile loop on the I-94 highway in Michigan. We maintain a GPS verified 75 MPH and use the cruise control as much as possible to mimic the way many drivers behave during long trips. During our 200-mile road fuel economy test Loop, it exceeded the EPA maxima rating, achieving an impressive 32 MPG. The Kia Cadenza and the Toyota Avalon have conservative road indices, too, as each beat their EPA numbers by 3 mpg for 31 and 33 mpg, respectively.

The 3.5-Liter V-6 makes 300 horsepower and moves maxima together with purpose. The CVT, however, remains from the mission of the maxima of sports-sedan. Although it will mimic a typical automatic under heavy throttle, the CVT otherwise spoils the V-watch fun. All the maximums are front-wheel drive, which is well under normal circumstances. When pushed hard, however, the brutal motor can easily turn the front wheels, which seems out of place in this segment.
