2023 Nissan Armada Review
Almost the only SUVs you can get today that are still truck-based are the big ones, and that includes the 2023 Nissan Armada. This three-row SUV competes with other giants like the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon, and Jeep Wagoneer.
Its rugged spine and powerful V8 engine give it more capability and presence than the smaller Nissan Pathfinder, as evidenced by its 8,500-pound maximum tow rating. Pathfinder can only manage 6,000 pounds. But Fleet did come with a compromise.
Unlike Pathfinder, Fleet is less comfortable and much thirstier. The Fleet also loses some of its shine when it comes head-to-head with other large SUVs. Its V8 is less fuel efficient than the Expedition’s turbocharged V6 or V8 or the optional Chevrolet Tahoe diesel engine, for example.
The Armada design also looks quite dated compared to the refreshed Jeep Wagoneer and redesigned Toyota Sequoia. Unless you can get a great deal on Armada, all of these rivals are worth checking out first.
The Fleet offers a fairly quiet and well-isolated driving experience. The wide front seats are comfortable but offer little support to hold you in place in corners. The optional second-row captain’s seat is well padded but cannot be shifted back and forth to increase legroom. The third-row seats are rudimentary by today’s standards.
Climate control is a breeze, and while we would have liked more ventilation for such a large interior, we were more disappointed with the way the climate system couldn’t maintain a consistent temperature when set to its automatic mode. In our test, The Armada ventilated seat was also quite noisy without providing any noticeable cooling.
The ride quality is definitely on the soft side. It pays dividends when driving over small and medium bumps. But it’s a liability on larger undulations where you’ll feel shaky and jostled. Other SUVs feel tighter and more controllable. Our test vehicle’s 22-inch wheels with short tire sidewalls didn’t really help either.

2023 Nissan Armada Interior
The front seats have enough room, but the farther back, the worse the results. The second-row captain’s seats stay in place (won’t slide like those on some rival SUVs), and the third-row seats sit low on the floor and are difficult to get in and out of.
The Fleet also has a high ride height, and a side assists step is pretty much necessary even for an average-sized adult.
The new Armada dashboard design features a large infotainment screen and new climate controls. They are easy to use, but the controls and graphics look dated. Outside visibility on the Armada is fine, although the thick front roof pillars and large mirrors can block your view at sharp left turns. The available surround-view camera system helps greatly reduce parking stress.
Cargo space is cramped behind the third row. Loading is hampered by the high cargo floor and long reach above the large rear bumper. With the optional captain’s seat, the second-row armrests protrude above the cargo floor, making loading longer items difficult. Interior storage for front passengers is a bit lacking.
The front center console is great, but that’s about it. You’ll probably use the front cupholder a lot to store your other belongings.
The Fleet doesn’t score well for towing. It has a maximum tow rating of 8,500 pounds when properly equipped, which is right around what you’d get from a Chevy Tahoe. Most trims come standard with a trailer brake controller.

The touchscreen is large, but the graphics don’t look as modern as we’d like. The system also takes time to boot. Apple CarPlay (with wireless function) and Android Auto are standard.
Both are preferable to Nissan’s original infotainment interface and are a bit clunky. There aren’t as many USB and power ports as we’d expect from a large SUV, and the placement, especially for second-row passengers, isn’t ideal.
Fortunately, there are many standard advanced safety features. They all operated fine in our tests. Adaptive cruise control brakes and accelerates smoothly, although both functions are a little slow to react.

The Fleet’s 5.6-liter V8 engine is sturdy. On the Edmunds test track, our test Armada sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, which is one second faster than the same-priced Chevrolet Tahoe as a 5.3-liter V8. The Fleet also has impressive passing power at higher speeds.
Equally impressive are the Armada brakes, which stop the massive SUV from 60 mph in just 123 feet—that’s nearly 10 feet shorter than its closest competitor. Around town, the brakes are reliable and consistent.
No one expects a large SUV to handle so well, and while the Armada is one of the easiest to drive, its handling limits are modest. Steering is slow (you need to turn the steering wheel more than you’d expect) and there’s not much to it.

The EPA estimates the Fleet gets a combined 15 mpg (13 city/18) with four-wheel drive and 1 mpg better across the board with RWD. That’s a few mpg less than other full-size SUVs.
We hit 16.5 mpg on our 115-mile highway evaluation route, so at least the EPA estimates seem accurate. Premium fuel is required for maximum power, but the Armada does well at 87 octanes.
